Committees

Our local has several committees that work together to achieve specific goals.  You will find a summary of each committee.  If you are interested in volunteering for a committee, please reach out to a member of the Executive Board for more information.

Negotiating Committee

Committee members are: Brittany Nisbett, Heather Francey, Christina Cramp,  Kaitlynn Bennett

This committee has been elected by you, the membership.  The function of this committee is to solicit input from the membership, prepare to negotiate the best collective agreement possible.  The CUPE National representative assigned to our local will act as a consultant and a non-voting member of this committee.

Joint Health and Safety Committee

Committee members are: Dani Brien and Jacqueline DiRamio

This committee seeks to improve the protection of our members against occupational diseases, illness and injury.  With our members facing a wide variety of on-the-job hazards, the Health and Safety Committee educates and communicates with the members about hazards and works with the employer to remedy health and safety concerns.

Special Committees

A special committee may be established for a specified purpose and a specified period of time by the membership at a meeting.  The members shall be elected at a membership meeting, or may, by specific authorization of the membership, be appointed by the President or the Executive Board.  Two members of the board may sit on any special committee as ex-officio members.  These committees include;

  1. Scheduling Committee

Committee members are:  Dani Brien and Christina Cramp

This committee works with the employer to ensure that there is consistency and fairness to how scheduling is being done.

        2. Grievance Committee

This committee will consist of the two Unit Chief Stewards, the two Unit Vice Presidents and at least one steward as appointed by the President. When a grievance is not settled in the initial steps provided for in the collective agreement, this committee will decide whether or not the grievance should proceed to arbitration. If the decision is to not proceed, the griever(s) may appeal the decision to the Executive Board. The committee will be chaired by the appropriate Units Chief Steward. The committee shall appoint its secretary from among its members. The National Representative assigned to the Local Union shall be a non-voting member of the committee and shall be consulted at all stages

        3. Labour Management Committee

Committee members are: Dani Brien

This committee works with the employer in an attempt to improve the organization's labour relations environment and to deal with concerns that do not meet the criteria of a grievance.

        4.  Bylaw Committee

This committee will review the bylaws when requested by the membership or the executive and make recommendations to the Executive Board on proposed amendments.  This committee will also
review any proposed amendments received from the Executive Board or membership of the Local Union to ensure that the amendments will conform to the remainder of the bylaws and the CUPE National Constitution.

Equality statement

Union solidarity is based on the principle that union members are equal and deserve mutual respect at all levels. Any behaviour that creates conflict prevents us from working together to strengthen our union.

As unionists, mutual respect, cooperation and understanding are our goals. We should neither condone nor tolerate behaviour that undermines the dignity or self-esteem of any individual or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.

Discriminatory speech or conduct which is racist, sexist, transphobic or homophobic hurts and thereby divides us. So too, does discrimination on the basis of ability, age, class, religion, language and ethnic origin.

Sometimes discrimination takes the form of harassment. Harassment means using real or perceived power to abuse, devalue or humiliate. Harassment should not be treated as a joke. The uneasiness and resentment that it creates are not feelings that help us grow as a union.

Discrimination and harassment focus on characteristics that make us different; and they reduce our capacity to work together on shared concerns such as decent wages, safe working conditions, and justice in the workplace, society and in our union.

CUPE’s policies and practices must reflect our commitment to equality. Members, staff and elected officers must be mindful that all persons deserve dignity, equality and respect.
